The foster child joke was never funny – and wasn’t really meant to be.
It was just a snide line my wife or I traded for about six months after we got our license; it was more of a coping mechanism than anything else. The setup for the un-joke was that whenever we were planning an evening away from home, one of us would say, “Oooh, what happens if the foster-care people call with a child in need?”
Our chuckles were always pained because we didn’t get the calls and we never got a foster kid.
A year on now with an empty room full of toys, we’re wondering, “What’s wrong with us?”
