State judiciary to hold summit on foster care for LGBT youth after critical report

Judges, attorneys and social services professionals from across the state will gather Wednesday for a summit to address the foster care needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer or questioning youth, according to the Maryland Judiciary.

The announcement of the summit Friday, which organizers said they believe will be the first of its kind in the country, follows a critical report by the nonprofit coalition Youth Equality Alliance last month that found LGBT kids in the state’s foster, juvenile justice and education systems are more vulnerable than their peers.

The YEA report found high percentages of LGBT foster youth nationally experience harassment or physical violence in foster care group homes, and prejudicial treatment by service providers.
