Keeping children safe, bringing them home

Camille Schraeder and her twin were taken from their mother at 2 months of age due to failure to thrive – they were starving to death – and taken into supportive foster care, returned to their mother at age 4 and sent to a combination of foster and group homes until they were 21.

“I learned a great deal about right and wrong and how to serve your community by being at In Search of Truth group home, where I experienced illegal and inappropriate care.

“In spite of that, they taught me to be aware of my own leadership abilities and how to be responsible. That, combined with a nurturing environment during my early years, taught me how to have meaningful life work,” says Schraeder, now the executive director of Redwood Children’s Services.
